There was a little game shop in my city that had tons of crazy stuff you could rent. I bought the Super Famicom adapter and could rent Famicom game there but all I really rented were fighting games tat he time but I didn't know HOW to import anything back then.
I have only imported three games and they were all in the past 6 months for Nintendo Switch! Aleste Collection, Kyukoku Tiger collection, and ESP RA.DE.
That's interesting that both you guys have only imported recently for the Switch. Seems a shame they couldn't release those games internationally!
pimsbury Actually I guess if you live in the USA you had less reason to import. Here in the UK we had PAL. Especially when the SNES came out people wanted the Japanese systems with the full speed, full-screen games to show off their new machines. So was a bigger incentive for us. But yes expensive!
The first game I imported (not including the 2 games that came bundled with my Jap SNES) was Street Fighter II. It cost me £75 at the time and it was worth every penny. Obviously it's not arcade perfect but back then it was! It was amazing
The last game I imported was actually just a few days ago : the new 10 game compilation for the Taito Egret 2 mini. I think it's called Taito Arcade Memories Volume 1. I haven't received it yet. I was waiting to see if it would get a UK release but it was looking unlikely so I took the plunge.
Oh man, I'm not even sure if I remember the first game I've ever imported! My best guess would be Art of Fighting 2 for the AES, which I got from a Japanese seller on eBay soon after I got my hands on the Neo Geo AES. This must have been back then in around 2010 or so. Before that I never really saw the need to import any video games, plus I didn't have any money before that.
The last game must have been Xeno Crisis for the AES which was shipped directly by Bitmap Bureau in UK. I was pretty happy how they handled all the sale and shipping of the game, plus it was reasonably priced for a brand-new homebrew AES game (unlike certain other homebrew developers who on top that postpone their titles to infinity and beyond).
In any case I fell that modern gamers nowadays don't have the need to import any video games from abroad anymore, since a majority of today's video games are published on digital stores anyway. Of course there are still people that still buy physical copies of modern video games, but I can imagine it's only a fraction of what it used to be. But for us retro gamers and collectors that's a whole different thing of course!
Back in the day I never saw many Famicom or mega drive games Riko. I didn't know there were so many games that didn't make it to the states in the first place. I didn't even think about imports until JRPGS were big on the Playstation and I didn't know how to read Japanese anyway so that wasn't worth it.
Plus I didn't think Japanese consoles would work on our fancy AMERICAN ELECTRICITY.
I'm just glad consoles aren't region locked anymore or else I would have bought some of the XBOX 360 shmup imports years ago.
I was thinking, all my games for my Jap SNES were imported. But I only ever owned about 8-9 games at the time for cost reasons. Those games really got played a lot though.
Murikov - Impressive and hardcore that your first and last are both Neo Geo games! I have to say I do like that finally I can get hold of new Neo Geo games easily with BitmapBureau being here and NGDev being so near in Germany (there were no import taxes until the B word!)
pimsbury Yes I always wondered why so many people import those JRPGS. Often in the reviews in magazines they would say "You can get by with a little Japanese" But surely you'd miss most of the story even so and it wouldn't be much fun.
I did actually import one of the Burger King games (Sneak King) for 360. I thought it looked so creepy I had to buy it but sadly doesn't work on my 360. I got it with another game I wanted so I didn't bother doing any research. I thought there would be a boot-disc at the time.
I recently bought an import copy of Persona 4 Arena for the Switch since there was no physical version in the US (it was a digital only release over here), but I am hoping that like with most japanese Switch games I have in physical form it will load the english version of the game when I play it on a US system. The guy I bought it from said it will take several weeks to get here though.
I've imported tons of games as well as bought them abroad, but none of them were new or relevant at the time, I think. It would never have even occurred to me as a kid to import a game from another country, and as an adult, I just don't have the interest.
pimsbury: Sounds like SNK is thinking about anoth err Art of Fighting!

Murikov: Dear NGF bros, don't be surprised about the "Recent Threads" box below this shoutbox. I'll leave it there for testing purposes for a whole week, and if it works, we'll maybe enable it for good for this site.

pimsbury: Minecraft sucks...... you in.... whether you like it or not. Especially if you're playing survival mode. I spent a month on one map just trying to build a cool castle, but ended up building a giant rail system with huge bridges that linked up the mines
