Say who or what you think is overrated in video games and feel free to argue!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm going to say Treasure :
I own Bangai-O (Dreamcast), Alien Soldier (MD), Gunstar Heroes(MD), Astro Boy (GBA), Silhouette Mirage (Saturn), Radiant Silvergun (Saturn ,360), and a boot of Ikaragua (Dreamcast). I do think these are all good games but mostly they lack the instant appeal of games from more mainstream companies like Capcom or Konami (ironically!).
I feel Treasure went from being underrated to overrated if that makes sense. I had never really heard people talking specifically about them until the early 2000s. And at that point the only game I had played by them was Gunstar Heroes. Which I thought was pretty good but not as good as Contra. At the time I just found it a bit too intense for me.
Then when I got my Dreamcast I heard people raving about Bangai-O - a game which had only reviewed ok-to-good in most magazines. SO I bought that and I definitely enjoyed it but it just seemed a bit imprecise + contrary and not as satisfying as other games. So yes a good game but not a great game for me (although it is a game I want to go back to now).
I would say that's the feeling I get with most Treasure games - they often go against the grain and end up being a little unsatisfying as a result. For example having to change the colour or direction of your shot to shoot different types of enemies. It's a gameplay mechanic but is it a fun one? The greatest Treasure game I have ever played and I rank it as an all-time-great is Gradius 5 on PS2. When they had to make a conventional schmup - they made one of the best ones ever
I'm not saying Treasure make bad games - far from it - but IMO they are overrated. Let me know if you agree or disagree
