The base game, Breakers Revenge, is the one most people play, but the Neo Geo CD received an exclusive mode known as Extra Mode. The changes this introduces to Breakers Revenge include an extended combo system, more character colors, and all normals and specials are given more cancels than in the base game. Extra Mode also gives players a push block and Combo Breaker (pun not intended). There are several other changes, such as hard knockdowns being removed and forced Draw Games. It's basically taking an already busted fighting game and making it even more busted by effectively removing rules from the base game. It's both funny and infuriating, so it's definitely worth a look if you like the base game.
Powerwave - I originally got into this game thanks to you and Tjeerd. I didn't like it at first - seemed like a bit of a SF2 rip off. But now I love it and Sho is a great character. The gameplay is just superb and it's easily the best Capcom style VS fighter on the system.
I was coincidentally watching a video of some things you can do on extra mode yesterday. I think you can get knocked out and still execute a super and knock your opponent out for a double knockout. Can you get this mode on cart at all using the Unibios?
I am definitely thinking of getting a Switch when this comes out for it and playing online against random people to get good. The Switch seems to have a good selection of retro games on it.
Yes you're right Powerwave it's just Breakers on the NGCD not Revenge. I actually used to own Breakers for NGCD but forgot there was an extra mode. I didn't play the game very much because of the loading times.
There is a Breakers Revenge hack available including an 'extra mode'. Should be possible to use this on FightCade.
I'm glad if I played a small part in getting you into Breakers RiKo.
ahh riko its good to hear we helped you realise the genius of the breakers
merlin has helped me get a rom working of breakers revenge in fightcade so hopefully despite my rubbishness at using computers we can have a few games soon.
also its good to hear your thinking of getting a switch with breakers to, its the most handy console for retro gaming in my opinion, I will defo be up for some breakers online with you if you decide to purchase
RiKo I'm not sure if you can access that mode with the UniBios.
Some people are playing Extra Mode on FightCade 2 and there was even a tournament listed on Challonge.
I found some info written by the hack creator Jed Possum:
I made a disassembly of Breakers Revenge and with that I added all the Extra Mode from the CD version of Breakers changes to it. So now you get Saizo with the Extra Mode changes All the changes deal with mechanics of the game (character data stayed the same in the original extra mode) Burst (Costs a meter just press 3 buttons when getting hit) Push block added (just press 3 buttons when blocking) Normals chain and can be jumped cancel Combo into grabs And a lot of moves cancel into other moves that the document included goes over Only feature I added that the original didn't do is you can select the CPU only color now by holding start.
Glad you're giving FightCade a go Powerwave and I'm looking forward to some matches with you too.
The frame rate of Breakers on Dreamcast is really poor and, when you put it up against the Neo-Geo version, which runs super fast and liquid butter smooth, the lack of frames and, when some specials and supers are triggered, chunks of lag become incredibly noticeable. It’s like you’ve turned the game down to 60 per cent speed. Now look, don’t get me wrong, Breakers is perfectly playable on Dreamcast, it's just nowhere near the Neo-Geo version in terms of frame rate, and therefore animation slickness and fluidity. It just runs much slower and, if I was to have a guess, this is almost certainly because the Dreamcast version isn’t a true port but just a ROM running off an emulator.
Merlin - that's interesting to read, Extra mode sounds fun but also a bit unbalanced. I am definitely happy just playing the normal mode and trying to get good at that first. It's cool they added an extra mode though.
I heard also the Dreamcast version of MOTW is inferior to the Neo Geo version too. I think the Neo Geo hardware is just too powerful
Powers - Def up to play some matches against your Dao-Long. I am moving house now (packing) so after the first couple of weeks of March will be good. I also don't have my arcade stick where I am living at the moment. Can you use an arcade stick with Switch btw?
Yes that's right Powerwave. The same people who released Bang Bang Busters.
I will do the same RiKo and just concentrate on the normal mode. I think it's cool that someone was able to recreate the NGCD Extra mode though and it's something that will be fun to play around with in the future.
Probably you guys will have seen these tutorial videos before but I think it's worth adding them to the thread. The SRK guide I linked to has some info about which moves you can use to breaker.
Yes thanks for the vids Merlin. I always hate it when I practice something in training and get it down - then I find it really hard to do for a while in a real match. Kind of makes me worse for a while until it becomes instinctive. Does anyone else find this?
I tell myself it's not losing - it's learning
Is Breakering an official term ? Or is that just what people call it. Just wondering if that is the reason for the game's name. I always just assumed it was about tough fighters breaking things (bones!)
I know exactly what you mean RiKo. It's not so easy to do things you've learned during practice when you feel under pressure in a match. I guess it just comes down to practicing so much that it becomes instinctive.
That's a good question. I'm not sure. I can't find many references to 'breakering' outside of that SRK guide. It does make sense considering you use a move to 'break' a combo the opponent is hitting you with.
In case anyone hasn't already seen them here are some high res scans of the Crystal Legacy flyer. You gain a relic after each fight and collecting all eight I assume gives you the power to defeat Bai-Hu. Some of the names in the screenshots don't match the names under the characters e.g. Serzi Maherl/Sahj Mahal, Piale Montario/Pierre Montalio, Park Tong Shin/Park Dong Jin. I'm glad they changed the look of the life bars and timer.
Yes could be I guess when they designed in combo breakers they could have well seen it as a innovation or something that defined their game. But I haven't seen it mentioned in any of the advertising material so maybe that's not the case.
Interesting to see those flyers and how the game changed since then. I think some of those names are a bit long/complicated for Western audiences so maybe that's why they changed them for "snappier" versions. I like that Tia is called Shelly Tarlor (Taylor).
I found this tier list. Merlin - you are an advanced player using both Pielle and Alsion III It's like you are taunting us with your skills!
Well here is a tier list that is usually agreed upon and is in order strongest to weakest.
Banned Bai Hu
Top Sho Kamui Saizo Tia Langray
Mid High Condor Heads Rila
Low Pielle Montario Serge Maherl Alsion III
Alsion III can still compete against Sho despite being on the bottom.

tuxedomarty: The story mode in the SNES version of TMNT Tournament Fighters is really giving me a lot of Art of Fighting vibes, with it centering around rescuing two people who were kidnapped and having little dialogue bits before each fight.

juegame: neogeofreak: So if they DON´T HAVE continuity, then you know where the problem lies. If they do. . . You know the pulse is interrupted somewhere in the PCB. (2/2)

juegame: neogeofreak2004. Like the GNR´S song my friend. . . patience !. You should use the multimeter to check if the wires have continuity. That means start with the plug and end right before the PCB. (1/2)
