Sorry if this thread is very similar to the D&D Adventure board game one - I guess this one is thought to be more oriented at any kind of board games.
Since last year or so a good friend of mine is keeping introducing me to several kinds of board games, and I must admit I was surprised how fun and immersive the world of board gaming can be. For instance I never knew that in terms of board gaming there's like two schools / doctrines of board games called Ameritrash and Eurogaming.
A few months ago we started playing Scythe, a turn-based strategy game which is kinda a mix of both the Ameritrash and Eurogaming playing styles. It's like if you combined games which promote rather aggressive playing styles (like Risk) but also ones which are rather based on gathering resources and trading with others (like Catan).
Once you open the interior of the massive box you may get overwhelmed by the number of pieces and stuff coming out, and also reading the rules requires some investment of time. But surprisingly, once you start playing it gets easier by every round and all the players get the hang of it. A whole game approximately takes about 2 hours.
The story, lore and art was created by the Polish artist Jakub Rozalski who calls the universe 1920+. It's basically depicting a alternate reality of post-WW1 Europe where the military powers such as Germany, Poland, Russia, the Crimean Khanate or the Scandinavian states have adapted steampunk technology such as mechs, tesla coils and such, and now fight about the supremacy on the continent.
Personally I got the impression that the game leaves it up to the player if he wants to play aggressively or passively, leaving a lot of options on how to win a game. Apart from battling each other or collecting resources, player can also win points by unlocking certain achievements or events in the game.
We played the game about two times so far and at both times it was a total blast - the other three players thought so as well. Personally I give this board game a score 9 out of 10. It's quite dynamic, fun and offers some good surprises to players of any styles. The only thing I didn't like is that there a lot of pieces, that it takes a while to read the rules and that battles can be a bit short. Apart from that I can highly recommend it.
If you are curious and want to try it out, there's also a decent digital version of the game and also a separate real-time-strategy game called Iron Harvest which is based in the same 1920+ universe.
Anyone else knows some good board games?
