As the title suggests, tell people the story behind your avatar and username.
There are some interesting ones here and I'd like to know people's reason for selecting them.
My name 2d comes from my old NGFL handle "Life_in_2d". When NGF was launched, I figured I would just shorten it. I also use "2D!" when I can, for arcade scoreboards... but NGF doesn't allow exclamation points in usernames.
My avatar is from a weird game called "Xargon: The Mystery of the Blue Builders" for MS-DOS. It's not such a great game, but it is very surreal and unique and in some instances creepy. I just picked the face in my avatar because it looks weird and I am a weirdo.
My nickname has about a 17 years long history and even much longer when you consider its origins...
Muri was a nickname I got back in elementary school and it sticked to me since then - friends still call me by that.
Then in 2003 I became obsessed with C&C: Red Alert 2 which I played online sometimes, obviously always as the Soviet faction. In my juvenility I thought that adding an -kov to my usual nickname would make it sound cool.
Another related fun fact: During my time in the Boys Scouts I actually got the official call name "Yuri". Quite matching, isn't it?
As for the current avatar, some of you surely recognize it as Zan from Undercover Cops, probably my favorite arcade Beat 'em Up. Why I chose it? Because he kinda looks like me and it's an awesome retro game of course!
2d - I finally know where your avatar comes from. It is spooky for sure! I was just watching a video of that game and saw it in situ. Looks like an interesting game too.
Zak - Very cool. I like Old And Wise by Alan Parsons Project. But knew nothing else about them until now!
And someday in the midst of time When they asked me if I knew you I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes Oh, when I'm old and wise
Murikov - I have almost called you Muri a few times - just because I am one of those annoying people who shortens everyone's names Undercover cops - great game. I can totally relate to adding "ov" to your name to make it sound cool too.
lol well - the origin of my screen name is ridiculous. I used to be obsessed with Mexican boxers and wanted to be one (even though I am not Mexican and don't box). For this reason I later had to buy the first Knockout Kings game on Playstation 1 and create my own Mexican boxer who I called Ricardo Vasquez (my name is Rich/Richard). Then in other non-boxing games I shortened that to Rico (this was also because I liked Starship Troopers, where the main character is called Rico)
and *then* (stay awake!) on NG4L I called myself Riko because it sounded more Japanese and appropriate.
EDIT: My Avatar is of course Sho from Breakers Revenge. That's my current fav fighting game on Neo Geo and he is my favourite character.
Great idea for a thread! I'm enjoying these revelations.
As for me, I watched a lot of anime in the early 2000s. Boogiepop Phantom (released in 2000) was among them. I tried to find a decent clip on youtube that wouldn't reveal anything, but came up with nothing. A lot of them were about some recently released version that doesn't look nearly as dark as the old-school anime. If you happened to see and enjoy Serial Experiments Lain or like strange stuff that leave you with a somewhat unsettled stomach, it may appeal to you.
Anyway, I later read some of the original books that had been translated into English and found them to be absolutely awesome. They're young adult novels with a Pulp Fiction-style disjointed storytelling that deal with the power of philosophies taken to extremes and... Buffy(? Not really but I can't come up with something better, so that'll have to suffice). I simply cannot recommend them highly enough.
The first three books in English go as follows: Boogiepop and Others Boogiepop returns vs Imaginator Part 1 Boogiepop returns vs Imaginator Part 2
Nothing from the anime is in the books so you can start with either.
And in case you haven't guessed by this point, my avatar is of Boogiepop.
It's really cool to see the various influences that people draw from for their online personas. This thread alone got me wanting to find out about music, anime and games that I would have never heard of otherwise.
Riko : Really weird how you were wondering about my avatar and you found out shortly after. Xargon is a cool game, I think it's even freeware these days. Hope you get to play or at least see a playthrough on YT.
My avatar is of course Tuxedo Mask, and my username came from all the way back in 2010 which was already 11 years ago, which I can’t believe. I was on Facebook checking through my feed and I had been using another picture of Tuxedo Mask as my display pic at the time, and somebody messaged me that began with “Hey Tuxedo Marty!”, and I liked how it sounded, so I stuck with it.
I have been a huge fan of the works of H.P. Lovecraft for many, many years, hence my user name Cthulhu (for those who do not know, Cthulhu is an evil deity created by Lovecraft and focal point of the Cthulhu mythos).
My avatar is part of a photograph I took of some skulls in Denmark...I love skulls. I did edit out the background though.
By the way, the watermark is the one I use in all my photographs on Facebook and Instagram.
I tip my hat to you fellow Lovecraftians - I too have this big ass Complete Fictions collection by Knickerbocker:
My favorite stories must be The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Shadow over Innsmouth, Mountains of Madness or Beyond the Wall of Sleep.
In case you never looked into it, I can also highly recommend the somewhat clunky, but true to its roots PC game Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. It builds up on the premises of Shadow over Innsmouth and greatly expands the events of the story and lore. I did another playthrough last year and enjoyed it even more than back then.
pimsbury: Sounds like SNK is thinking about anoth err Art of Fighting!

Murikov: Dear NGF bros, don't be surprised about the "Recent Threads" box below this shoutbox. I'll leave it there for testing purposes for a whole week, and if it works, we'll maybe enable it for good for this site.

pimsbury: Minecraft sucks...... you in.... whether you like it or not. Especially if you're playing survival mode. I spent a month on one map just trying to build a cool castle, but ended up building a giant rail system with huge bridges that linked up the mines
