Riko and Scrum like this

We're in the middle of a huge fighting game renaissance and there really is something out there for everyone right now. But one thing I've been really thinking about for the last few years is that everything from the major fighting game publishers is either a sequel, a crossover, or a licensed fighter. Back in the day Capcom could have just kept making Street Fighter, but they were bold enough to try new things whether it was Darkstalkers or even something crazier like Star Gladiator. SNK had KOF and SamSho, but they still made Last Blade. The last time one of the big fighting game publishers put out something completely original (not counting indies here of course) was when ArcSys put out BlazBlue in 2008! And the last one before that was ArcSys again with Battle Fantasia in 2007! So I'm going to go over how likely any of the big fighting game companies are to put out something new that is completely original and not based on any already existing property.
Arc System Works: Based on what was said above and the fact that BlazBlue is over they might honestly have the highest chances. DBFZ was very successful though so I think it's a lot more likely that we'll see another anime licensed fighter from them.
Capcom: No. Street Fighter and Vs series games are all we're getting from them I'm afraid. Hopefully CVS3 instead of Marvel 4, but even if they didn't go with the Vs series next they have a lot of old series they would probably revive instead of making something new.
SNK: Again, too many old series that could use a comeback. And they're doing a really good job at that too!
Namco: It seems like Soul Calibur is dead for at least a while so Team Soul has to be working on something. I would love something completely new from them, but I'd be much less surprised if they also picked up an anime license.
Sega: They're afraid to even make a new Virtua Fighter, they're not making anything else either.
Tecmo: Seems like DOA is dead so I actually have a lot of hope that Team Ninja is working on something original! Failing that, taking Dynasty Warriors back to it's fighting game roots would also be awesome.
Arika: Yeah, I'll include Arika in this! Highly doubt they'll do anything other than more Fighting EX Layer though.
So yeah... I want the big companies to make something completely fresh but I don't have much hope it'll happen soon. It's fun to think about but until then the indies are delivering at least!
