What a coincidence that this is the first thread I see here, since it's my favorite Neo game
I have to disagree with the criticism here. The game *is* very difficult once you reach the penultimate stage (especially on 1 quarter with the floating eyeballs trying to toss you off the machine) but is completely doable once you get the hang of it. The character is perfectly agile and adequate to deal with all the enemies in the game, it's just a very methodical game to play, this is not Metal Slug -- for example, the cat ladies on the penultimate stage have a very easy pattern to deal with that punishes panic inputs, the enemy will either jump OVER you or walk in front of you for an attack, once you know this it's fairly easy to take care of multiple, just stand still and start firing, or turn over if she jumps over you. Same with the Crossed Swords froggies, not all frogs transform so you can take your time and start shooting at them. You'll notice that the normal frogs are dispatched easily, but the ones that transform are suspiciously invincible until they actually do become frog warriors, and the game usually brings out one or two of those per frog group on Level-4. Since their only means of movement is a fixed length jump you can again calmly avoid their contact damage and dispatch of them.
You will probably die a lot if you rush forward, but if you go slow it will be much better. Hell even the two-shot limit of the base main character seems stupid at first but actually pretty good once you give more thought on your A button presses, he even is more powerful than some transformations if you get the 'P' power-up items and don't lose them.
Now am I saying this game is easy? Not really, I'm saying it's doable once you know what you're doing. It requires some memorization but once you get a general gist of how the enemies/bosses behave, and what paths you should take in each level, the game is a lot more fun, it's still going to give you things to get angry about near the end (especially on a 1cc) but it's a fulfilling hard like many other arcade classics, not a bullshit, unfair, screw this game hard. It's like Final Fight, there's a huge divide about it but in my opinion it does everything an arcade game should right, it has great underlying game mechanics and a ball busting difficulty that will actually captivate many to overcome it (after giving the operator tons of practice quarters, naturally!)
Here's a NGCD 1cc video I made a while back -- note that in the NGCD version you don't have much of a difference compared to the AES version aside from a larger health bar and very slow mid-bosses. I think everything else is mostly the same.
