I'll be posting the HSC rules this weekend (maybe earlier) and they're going to be based on the high score thread at Arcade Otaku, which in my opinion is a nicely organized way of keeping track of high scores. I will also start the GotM thread the first of march. I still have figure out what I'm going to do with that one, but it'll be linked to the HSC as it was in the past.
Rules look good to me Cthulhu, easy to follow and understand. Great work! I like the "Winners don't cheat!"
Some thoughts I had:
I think there should be a post limit before you can post a high score. To stop expert players coming by and crushing our high scores and then just leaving again. I would say maybe 50 posts? Just to make sure the HSC is for regular forum users. It's always more fun competing against friends than random strangers. What do other members think about this?
I think also add no "Pause" cheating. On the old Puzzle Bobble challenge some players were pausing a lot to get more time to assess what to do next. Obviously I think pausing to take a break is fine. You might want to mention this on the specific game challenge rather than the general rules though.
There *may* be specific games that may have score-exploits - which we can probably just mention in that game challenge if it's ok to do that or not. I can't actually think of any offhand other than shooting the ground in Zedblade to get points - but how can you avoid shooting the ground at certain times?? So that might be one that has to be allowed
Also what are the rules about using our old high scores from the old forum? The only Neo Geo game I ever 1CC'd was Cyberlip and I don't think I cant be bothered to get that good at it again I still have a few images of my highscores for games on my HD. So I think this should be allowed - what do other people think?
BTW Everyone I changed the "Reply" button to "Advanced Reply" now to make it more obvious for new people to the forum. Let me know if you think thats' ok? The other option would be to call it something like "Reply Options"
About the post count, I will see what happens. If this indeed will become a problem, then I'll change the rules to make it more for active member (read post count) be active and delete the offending scores. Off course I'm going to allow old scores from the old site, if there is visual evidence, that's all that counts.the more scores the better, old or not. The problem with cheating, be it the pauze cheat or save states ir any other type, it might be very difficult to prove. Also listing all types of cheating would make the list too long in my opinion. We'll see what happens. If anyone is having doubts about a High Score, we should try to find out if cheating was involved or not.
Thanks for posting the rules Cthulhu. They look good to me. I like that you added the screenshot rule. Although a screenshot doesn't prove 100% that someone isn't cheating it's still better than just posting a number. If it's possible to do something about any people who randomly appear, beat a score and then vanish that would be great. That happened to me a few times.
Riko shooting the background scenery in Zed Blade is seen as an acceptable tactic. The three characters score a different number of points doing that. There's some discussion of it at the Shmups forum. I did that in the previous Zed Blade HSC. Constantly shooting the scenery with Uncle Beard (and some boss milking) got me into first place ahead of someone who had actually 1CC'd the game (I only got to the stage 5 boss).
It's also acceptable when playing for score to kill respawning enemies while a timer runs down. However in Ganryu there has to be a rule that you can only pick up extra lives once because otherwise you can repeatedly let the timer run down while killing enemies, die and then pick up the extra life again.
There are a few games in which level 4 is not the default difficulty such as Last Resort (level 3) and Andro Dunos (normal).
Good idea making that advanced reply change RiKo. I think that makes sense.
I think 50 post-count may be a big high now. I changed my mind after thinking about it. Because we want the HSC to be an attraction of the forum - and we don't want to to seem like it would take too long to access once you join - So I think maybe make it 30 posts now. What do you guys think about this?
Merlin - Yes I do agree it can't be an exploit in that game - because you end up shooting the background anyway - a lot of bosses have "background pieces" you end up shooting a lot for example. So the only thing to do is embrace it for the HSC. Personally I really enjoy Zedblade - but I hate shooting the background on purpose - it ruins the fun for me, so I probably won't be taking part in that one. Reminds me of Bombjack - where you get points for jumping and hitting walls - but that game becomes zero fun when you have to jump into walls non-stop to get a good score
Cthluhu - I agree about not adding pause cheating to the main rules - I would just put it in the specific challenges where this could be used e.g. Puzzle Bobble. And you're right - it cant be proven but at least if it's stated it will stop some people thinking it's a legitimate tactic (like happened last time).
Making it 30 posts sounds like a good compromise to me.
Cthulhu the way you worded that looks good to me. I just felt like mentioning that about those two games. Not sure if any other games are like that.
I know what you mean RiKo. Someone in that Shmups thread was also put off by the scoring in that game. It is a bit of a strange decision on the part of NMK. I think after the first stage it's not as much of a factor.
I just felt like mentioning that about those two games. Not sure if any other games are like that.
I didn't know that about those games...I don't know that much about cheating because I don't like to cheat myself. So if anyone here knows what kind of game specific cheating is possible, please let me know so I can state it in that game's thread. Let's try and make it as fair as possible for everyone.
2D do you not still have your high score screenshots on your computer or an image hosting account? I think you did well in some other challenges too especially SVC Chaos.
Unfortunately I will have to start from scratch in the Blazing Star challenge. I have both my screenshots but can't remember which one was done on level 4. There were originally two high score tables for that game.
I deleted the dark theme I created. No one was using it and it was unnecessary now that we have Murikov's theme.
Post count rule has been added to the High Score Challenge rules. Members now need to have a minimum post count of 30 to be able to participate.
Thanks a lot for setting up the HSC area, Cthulhu! We're soon getting back to old times.
I looked a bit into how we can bring back the HSC medals, and there is indeed the so called Awards Plugin on Proboards. As an example how it looks like on a mini-profile you can see here (the little cookies, thumb-ups etc. under the avatar).
As you see there are quite a lot of settings and preperations to it, and I rather want to implement that in the mid-term. Let's keep in touch on how it should look like.
Icons are looking great Murikov. Thanks for all your work on this. I like the hot dogs especially! Yes really good to see the forum getting back to the full-fat version (with HSC, icons etc)
Just going through some of the longer threads I think it would be a good idea to also have the thread navigation buttons (Prev, Next etc) at the bottom of the page as well as at the top. So I'll try to implement that in future. I may have seen a plug-in for this the other day but otherwise it seems like it could be fairly easy (famous last words!) to copy the HTML code used for the buttons to the bottom as well.

Murikov: Dear NGF bros, don't be surprised about the "Recent Threads" box below this shoutbox. I'll leave it there for testing purposes for a whole week, and if it works, we'll maybe enable it for good for this site.

pimsbury: Minecraft sucks...... you in.... whether you like it or not. Especially if you're playing survival mode. I spent a month on one map just trying to build a cool castle, but ended up building a giant rail system with huge bridges that linked up the mines
